I've been attempting to cancel my subscription for more than a year now. I'm absolutely frustrated and furious. Had I been aware of the immense hassle I would encounter, I would have avoided it a long time ago. It's not worth the trouble, so don't even bother.

You will not receive your subscription, and when you inquire about it, they have an absurd system where a different person responds each time, resulting in no progress being made.

Three months ago, I received an email from NS offering a special discount for three months of both print and digital subscriptions. However, during this time, despite exchanging numerous emails, I have not received a single issue or been able to access the magazine online. Despite my persistent efforts over the past month, I was simply told to "be patient" and informed that they were awaiting a response from another department. Then, out of the blue, I received a refund for my subscription fee without any explanation or response to my inquiry. At this point, I have decided to give up as it is evident that they cannot be relied upon.

The person in charge should take the time to read these numerous negative reviews, as they are undoubtedly damaging the brand.

I decided to cancel my subscription after being informed that my renewal would cost £99, but they ended up charging me £149 without prior notice. On 19/06, I was told that I would receive a refund. Then, on 27/06, I received another email stating that I would receive it within 5 working days. However, two weeks later, I am still waiting.

I called their customer services, which turned out to be an Indian call centre, and they informed me that there is a problem with their systems after an upgrade. They assured me that I would receive the refund in a few more days. When I requested to speak to a manager, I was told that it was not possible.

I am not going to give up on this matter. After further communication with New Scientist and still no refund, I decided to contact my credit card provider and requested a 'section 75' refund. Five working days later, I received an email from MasterCard informing me that they have upheld my request and credited my card account with £149. This is fantastic news, but it is important to note that New Scientist was not helpful in resolving this issue.

My father passed away unexpectedly in January 2023. We were assured a refund starting from March of this year. Despite numerous phone calls and emails, we have yet to receive the promised reimbursement. I completely agree with the other reviewers regarding NS subscriptions and their customer service - it is absolutely appalling. It seems as though they have made a conscious decision to deceive customers by promising a refund that never actually materializes. Initially, I was informed that the delay in receiving my refund was due to their migration to a new system. Then, I was assured that the refund had been processed and would be credited to my account within 7 days. However, it has now been over 2 weeks and I have yet to receive any refund.

It appears that their subscription service operates independently from their Content/Editorial division. It gives the impression that the Subscriptions department has been instructed to never issue refunds and instead, just keep prolonging the process until the customer eventually gives up.

How can a supposedly reputable magazine behave in such a manner?
